Completed Walks 2008

6th January
With the promise of a dry day Gordon lead 8 members from Coniston up and across Yewdale Fell with some spectacular views down onto Coniston Water and northward to the snow-capped tops of the Helvellyn range in the distance. We then descended to the Tilberthwaite valley where he let us have 10 minutes to devour what lunch we could beside the river. We then climbed to the ridge of Holme Fell, following its length northward before dropping to the lane leading to Tarn Hows. Instead of following the path around the tarn side, we branched right to climb to the summit of Tom Heights, then returned to Coniston via woodland tracks and our first after-walk pint of the year. A very enjoyable start to this years programme.

20th January
Although the weather forcast was unpromising, 6 of us met at Levens and were led by Brian through Levens Park, along the old canal route up to Kendal before joining the River Kent and returning via Stainton, Viver and Hincaster in conditions that, although a little wet underfoot, remained reasonably dry with the occasional decent view. A pleasant walk enhanced by our celebratery tipple in the Blue Bell at Heversham.

3rd February
With an overcast and breezy start to the day, but a promise of no rain until late afternoon, we set of from Ingleton car park, having deposited a car at Clapham. Battling through a strong, almost gale force, southerly wind, Dave led our group of 12 up the slopes of Ingleborough heading for the summit. Despite desperate pleas for morning refreshment from certain quarters, Dave dragged us to the top before we could rest and shelter from the bitterly cold wind. Suitably refreshed, our descent took us by way of Gaping Ghyll, Trow Ghyll and Ingleborough Cave before reaching our destination at Clapham. The drivers were whisked away to retreive the vehicles from Ingleton whilst the rest of the party enjoyed the usual end-of-walk tipple in the New Inn.

17th February
The previous week had seen clear skies day and night continuously causing the temperatures to plummet during the nights but the daytimes were glorious with wall to wall sunshine and beautiful views. Today was no exception. Three members plus a friend of mine assembled to complete Alan's challenge, a route from the Old Dungeon Ghyll, Langdale, up and over Stakes Pass into Langstrath, then a gruelling climb up the side of Glaramara to the summit. Here we met Paul and 2 of his companions who had done the route in the opposite direction and seemed a little less fatigued than our contingent. After exchanging pleasantries and the promise of a shared pint on our return, we continued over Allen Crags, dropped down to Angle Tarn, returning via Rossett Ghyll and Mickleden to join the Yorkshire lads for a well-earned drink in the O.D.G.

2nd March
Unfortunately, OR NOT, I was away on holiday IN SOUTH AFRICA, but I left Alan in charge of the walk which I believe was enjoyed by all who attended including the 'boyfriends'. He apparently took the group around Far Easedale up to Sargent Man, returning via Easedale Tarn and Sour Milk Gill. If it was any different please let me know.

16th March
Alas, still on holiday, but the programme suggests that Marjorie led a walk to Sadgill in Longsledale climbing up to Kentmere Pike.

30th March
A cloudy, overcast day saw 9 of us set off from Keld, near Shap, to follow Geoff and climb around Blaze Hill before descending into Swindale. From Swindale Head we followed Mosedale Beck before crossing it to branch left and gently descend into Wet Sleddale. We then made our way across to the Water Authority's concrete road following it to Brown Hill then back to the cars at Keld. The Highwayman in Shap village served us with our usual 'end of walk tipple'.

13th April
When we all assembled at 10 o'clock in the West Yorkshire village of Austwick it was obvious our leader, Liz, had used up her free BT call time ringing around the country drumming up support for her walk. 20 people turned up from as far away as Bradford picking up previously unseen walkers en route. Having spent 30 minutes with the introductions, we eventually got under way proceding up onto the limestone fellside rounding Thieves Common before returning via the lanes in the valley bottom to the hamlet of Wharfe. Unfortunately, in my view, we lost a golden opportunity to have afternoon tea beside a babbling brook, but our leader saw fit to take our break in a muddy farmers track leaning on a couple of old gates not 10 minutes from our destination. However, I forgave those responsible on reaching the 'Gamecock Inn' for our afternoon 't'.

27th April
Umbrellas were the order of the day when 5 of us met to travel north to a small car park somewhere close to the hamlet of Torver, near Coniston, but the drizzle did not deter us from following our leader, Brian, trudging through the muddy forest, across sodden bogs underneath the cloud-topped peak of Caw, then along old mining tracks to reach the road beneath our goal, Stickle Pike. This delightful little summit was gain with little effort in a dry patch of weather which held out whilst we partook of our lunches enjoying the view. From there our route took us around the southern end of the Dunnerdale Fells returning in heavy rain back through the forest to the awaiting car. Then a visit to fulfill Alan's ambition who had never experienced the pleasure of a pint in the 'Royal Oak' in Spark Bridge.

11th May
Oh how things can quickly change in Lakeland! This really was a day of 2 halves. A posse of 8 members gathered in brilliant sunshine decked out in their finest summer walking attire. Our route commenced on the eastern side of Thirlmere at the car park half way down the reservoir and our leader, Julian, took us through woodlands to the bridge over Birkside Gill before rounding the Southern end of the lake and proceeding north alongside the waters edge. To this point all was well. We had lunch with beautiful views in the warm sunshine little knowing what was in store. It thundered, a huge droplet hit my hand and literally soaked it. It went dark, then hailstones pelted us from above. Unfortunately, I had listened to Brian before we set off and unloaded my waterproofs because he advised me that they would not be required on a day like this. For an experienced Lake district walker like myself to say my actions, even on a day like this, were foolhardy is an understatement, and a lesson not to be forgotten. The remainder of the walk over the dam round to the refuge of the Kings Head was an exercise in speed walking to sink the first pint when keeping dry just wasn't an option.

25th May
Cyril led the walk up Great Cockup & Bray Fell but unfortunately I was unable to attend. I had an invitation to a 60th birthday celebration involving 10 pin bowling, a chinese banquet and late night drinks at a friends home. An opportunity not to be missed and the day proved just that.

8th June
A beautiful day saw 4 members head east for a day in the Yorkshire Dales. I led our small band over the shoulder of Hawkswick Moor into the glorious valley of Littondale proceding through the delightful hamlet of Arncliffe for a midday drink and lunch on the grass outside the pub at Litton. Then the climb out of the valley to the summit cairn of Old Cote Moor. We followed the ridge before dropping down Middlesmoor Pasture back to our starting point in the picturesque village of Kettlewell for our well earned pint.

22nd June
'British bl***y weather! I'm sure the Met. Office save these sort of days for Sundays. With the forecast of heavy rain and promised wind speeds of 60mph our assembled party of 5 concluded that the programmed ascent of the Old Man of Coniston was not on the cards. As an alternative, Stephie jumped into the breech and took us up to Beckfoot from where we visited 'Fox's Pulpit' before dropping into the valley to pick up the Dales Way and returning to the launch pad very much the damper for our excursion. However, our spirits were lifted with the customary toast to the days procedings at the Longlands Inn at Tewitfield.

6th July
Despite a gloomy forecast 3 of us intended completing the programmed walk and although the theats of rain eventually became reality it didn't deter us from having a good stroll over Hooksey, Randy Gill Top and Green Bell at the northern end of the Howgill Fells. Although the misty tops did not interfere with our navigation, we bumped into a couple of wanabe soldiers who were late for their rendevue in Newbiggin and, unknowingly, about 5k away from their intended route. (Another two bound for the dessert, I fear.) We toasted Geoff's leadership at the Cross Keys in Tebay as is the customary way at the conclusion of a successful walk.

20th July
Marjorie led this walk from Overbeck Bridge, at the side of Wastwater, up past Dropping Crag to the summit of Yewbarrow. Alas, we had to leave poor Brian at the lake side when he pulled a calf muscle at the start of the ascent, then spent the rest of the day watching the F1 Grand Prix at his nearby parents. Meanwhile, our merry band descended via Stirrup Crag prior to climbing Red Pike. Our way down took us past Scoat Tarn before following Nether Beck back to the car, then onward to the Bowerhouse Inn for our usual tipple.

3rd August
With Cyril suffering from back pain, I was volunteered to lead his walk from High Row, near Dockray, ascending Randerside and Great Dodd. The weather, unfortunately, prevented any reasonable views until we reached the rocky tor of Calfhow Pike, where we took lunch. It was well documented that a certain box of confectionery (usually supplied by our intended leader) had failed to arrived. However, with sandwiches downed, the mist and rain gradually cleared to improve our day as we firstly, climbed to the cairn on Clough Head, then descended over White Pike to the Old Corpse Road and a gentle return to our transport. A meander down the lane took us to the gardens of the Royal Hotel in Dockray for a deserved pint of the local brew.

14th December 2006

Our annual Christmas Dinner was held at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, Beetham, when 20 members of the club enjoyed a wonderful meal which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

16th December 2007
Once again, owing to popular demand, we held our Christmas Dinner at the Wheatsheaf Hotel at Beetham. This year we had 24 members enjoying a meal fit for a king with a little entertainment from Liz and yours truly.

2nd - 5th May 2008
Once again Alan devoted much of his time preparing the way for other members of the club to have a good time walking and socialising in unfamiliar terratory. This year he decided that we should occupy a cottage in Kinlochleven, Scotland.
Friday
Evening saw 10 of us congregate with 2 others taking accommodation in the village. Barbara prepared an evening meal, beer and wine flowed in quantity, then laughter filled our small kitchen/diner until bedtime.
Saturday
Four of the men rose early and climbed 3 munros, namely, Binnein Beag, Binnein Mor and Na Gruagaichean before having a break for lunch. It was then that someone suggested that, as it was only 1.30pm, it would be a shame to waste the afternoon by going back down, and other peaks were invitingly close. The suggestion seemed non-too appealing to me and I returned to base rather wearily. The others continued up Stob Coire a'Chairn and beyond.
Our 'B' party spent the day wandering the lower hills around Kinlochleven before we all met back at the cottage for a splendid evening meal prepared by our own Delia Smith, Ayls, followed by our own brand of nightly entertainment.
Sunday
Breakfast consumed, our 3-man 'A' party en route for more peak-bagging, the rest of us, including our Scottish contingent, Rob & Trish with canine pets, Roy and Meg, were transported to the head of Glencoe to walk a section of the West Highland Way back to Kinlochleven. With the Devil's Staircase conquered and almost half the walk completed, once again the question was asked if it was early enough to extend the walk to the dam of the Blackwater Reservoir. For once I succumbed and 4 of us left the party to walk up the pipeline to the dam before returning on the path following the River Leven to the village. Again it was an evening to savour with Pauline providing the main meal accompanied by Trish's nice pear in a crumble. Unfortunately, the comedy spluttered a little this evening.

I would like to add that Bob ("Two Hats") Hill did a historical (or was it hysterical) rendition of Health & Safety issues in the time of Nelson. The debate between a frustrated Nelson and a lisping, bureaucratic Hardy was instructional and hilarious - Julian.

Monday
Breakfast, pack and clean before all but 3 departed for home ground. Alan, Ayls and Judy stayed on to walk and view a waterfall before travelling to cross the border.
Our thanks go out to Alan for organising the trip, to the ladies who kept our stomachs filled with fabulous food and to all who had an input in the weekends entertainment. The Equity Cards are on the way.
